Family Therapy

Our family therapy sessions are designed to feel collaborative and open. Our therapists act as a guide, helping your family to explore how roles, patterns, and boundaries function within the home. Through conversations and practical exercises, you will discover new ways of relating to one another that can help to bring you closer together and improve your dynamic.

How does family therapy work?

The process of family therapy can feel a little confusing, so we like to illustrate it through metaphor. Imagine family therapy as an invitation into your home. You invite a therapist in and give them a tour. You show them where everything is and they ask "Why is this here and not over there?" They might say "Let's pick this up and move it over here." This kind of questioning and guidance helps you to imagine a different way of being. You move things around, reshuffle, and reorganize. That is what the process of family therapy is like. It is about restructuring boundaries, identifying patterns, and exploring the function of those patterns within the context of the family.

When should we consider family therapy?

Many families seek family therapy when they find themselves struggling with ongoing conflicts, communication issues, or feeling disconnected from each other. These issues could stem from generational or cultural differences, substance abuse, mental health conditions, and many other difficulties. Some families simply find themselves pulling apart and they need some guidance to come together again.

Can family therapy help me get along better with my parents / children?

Parent-child conflict is very common, especially as children grow into teenagers and adults. Family dynamics can become strained over time due to unresolved resentment, misunderstandings, and differences in values. Family therapy offers a structured way to address these conflicts, helping parents and their children understand each other's perspectives and develop healthier interactions. The goal of family therapy is to help you improve communication, establish respectful boundaries, and navigate challenging conversations in a constructive way. - Please note that we only accept clients who are 16+.

How can family therapy help our blended or multicultural family?

Blended families, step-families, and families with members from different cultural backgrounds face unique challenges. Family therapy can help you to navigate these complexities, addressing issues like loyalty conflicts when families merge, boundary-setting, and new & old family roles. Our goal is to help you work together, build trust, and connect in a way that honours each family member's needs and experiences. Our therapists have extensive experience working with diverse families and they understand the importance of respecting each person's cultural background. They will work with you to navigate differences in traditions, expectations, and values.
