Atara Lipetz

MRFT, RP (Q)

Hi I'm Atara! I work with individuals, couples, and families who are feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or caught in ways of relating that no longer fit the life they want to live. Whether you're navigating conflict in a relationship, questioning your sense of self, adjusting to life transitions, or trying to make sense of long-standing family dynamics, therapy can offer a space to slow down and approach these experiences with curiosity rather than judgment.

Others often describe me as enthusiastic, thoughtful, and open-minded. I hope therapy feels like a place where you can be heard without needing to perform, and where your experiences are taken seriously.

Some of my earliest memories are of sitting around other families' dinner tables. Growing up in a close-knit Jewish community, I spent countless hours listening to stories, observing relationships, and noticing how every family had its own way of loving, disagreeing, celebrating, and making sense of life's challenges. Those experiences sparked a lifelong curiosity about how people come to understand themselves while balancing the expectations of family, community, culture, and their own sense of identity.

That curiosity led me to McMaster University, where I completed a double major in Arts & Science and Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour. While I valued the scientific study of human behaviour and participated in psychology research, I found myself increasingly drawn to the stories behind the research. I cared much more for the lived experiences, relationships, and conversations that cannot always be measured, but still deeply shape our lives.

I continued that journey at the University of Guelph, where I was one of 12 students in the Relational and Family Therapy stream — a program accredited by both the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) — completing my Master's training in systemic psychotherapy with over 400 hours of direct client contact. Throughout my clinical work with individuals, couples, and families, I came to appreciate that many of the struggles people experience make sense when we consider the relationships, communities, and histories they are part of.

My approach to therapy begins with curiosity rather than assumptions. Together, we explore the relationships, conversations, family histories, cultural influences, spiritual beliefs, and social expectations that have shaped how you understand yourself and others. Often, as we begin to make sense of these patterns together, new possibilities for responding and relating naturally begin to emerge.

My work is informed by dialogic, collaborative, narrative, and solution-focused therapies, but more importantly by the belief that meaningful change happens through genuine conversation. I strive to create a space where people feel heard, respected, and invited to explore their experiences without needing to have everything figured out.

I continue to approach both life and therapy as a learner, and I consider it a privilege to walk alongside people as they discover new ways of understanding themselves, their relationships, and the lives they hope to build.
